Etnisten ryhmien persoonallisuuserot

Kirjoitin jo aiemmin eri etnisyyksien edustajien eroista täällä. Tämä toinen osa käsittelee eri etnisyyksien/rotujen välisiä persoonallisuuseroja. Faktojen lähteenä on J. Philippe Rushtonin tutkimukset, joista toki osa saattaa olla kiistanalaisia, niinkuin on esim. Suomen oman Tatu Vanhasen tutkimukset etnisten ryhmien älykkyyseroista. Lisänä tässä jutussa on jotain teoriaa MBTI-persoonallisuustestistä, joka on maailman suosituin luonnetesti.

Ensimmäisenä on hyvä tiedostaa, että keistä puhutaan kun puhutaan eri etnisten ryhmien biologisista eroista.

Tässä kuvassa on ns. puhtaat etniset ryhmät, jotka on ollut tuossa muodossa ainakin tuhansia vuosia. Nykyäänhän, johtuen kansanvaelluksista ja valloituksista – huomattava osa maapallon väestöstä on sekoittuneita, noin alle 500v sitten, joten se vähän sekoittaa pakkaa. Kuvassa kuitenkin ensimmäisenä vasemmalta on tyypillinen itä-aasialainen, sitten tulee tyypillinen Eurooppalainen, sitten ns. bantu-negroidi, Amerikan-Intiaani, ns. Austroloidi – eli Australian aboriginaalit, San Bushman ja viimeisenä oikealla on Pygmi.

Yleensä rotututkijat kuitenkin keskittyy tutkimaan kolmea ensimmäistä etnistä pääroturyhmää eli aasialaiset- Mongolidinen rotu, Euroopan, Länsi-Aasian ja niitten lähiseutujen asukkaat eli Kaukasidinen rotu, ja viimeisenä subsahara Afrikkalaiset eli Negridinen rotu. Monesti etenkin länsimaissa, nuo termit jaetaan kansanomaisemmin mustiin, valkoisiin ja aasialaisiin.

MBTI luonnetestien pohjalta on spekuloitu, että mustat olisi ESxP tyyppisiä, eli E=ulospäinsuuntautuneita, S=hetkessä eläviä, käytännöllisiä, P=spontaaneja. Siinä missä aasialaiset olisi lähes heidän vastakohta ollen INxJ tyyppisiä, eli I=sisäänpäinkääntyneitä, N=Intuiivisiä, tulevaisuuspainotteisia, J=organisoituja. Tuo x= olisi normaalisti joko F tai T eli onko F=tunteitten mukaan toimiva, vai T=järjen mukaan toimiva, mutta arvioiden mukaan T ja F jakautuu tasaisesti kaikille roturyhmille- joten siksi se on X. Noh ”valkoisen” rodun edustajat sitten yleensä on MBTI luonnetestien perusteella mustien ja aasialaisten välimaastossa. Valkoiset oikeastaan on lähes jokaisessa asiassa muutenkin aasialaisten ja mustien välimaastossa, aasialaiset ja mustat ollen 2 ääripäätä. Tietenkin nämä edustaa vain ns. keskiarvo-taipumuksia, eikä siten päde läheskään kaikkiin yksilöihin.

Initial Reflections
The topic of MBTI as it applies to race makes very popular discussion material in the typology community. However, not much reliable data exists that shows trends for each of the three races. Most correlations that have been made consist of peoples’ hypotheses and observations reported on forums. You may have noticed that certain personality types might be a higher proportion of one of the three main races – Black, White, or Oriental. Sometimes people say that Blacks seem more aggressive/athletic, Whites more original/creative, and Orientals more studious/reserved. It was somewhat difficult to apply personality types to each of the three races directly, so I opted for an indirect approach. During my research, I came across an excellent book by J. Philippe Rushton called Race, Evolution and Behavior which contains clues about the general personality types for each of the races. Blacks seem to use more Extraverted Sensing, and might have a higher proportion of ESxPs. Orientals may use more Introverted Sensing and Introverted iNtuition, so they probably contain more IxxJs. The function of Se has been linked to physical build. Page 7 gives body structure descriptions for the three races.
[Blacks] have wider shoulders, less body fat, and more muscle [than Whites].
The same narrow hips, longer legs, more muscle, and more testosterone that give Blacks an advantage over Whites, give Whites an advantage over East Asians.

Predictions

If a large scale study were to be done, this would be my prediction: Compared to the general population, there are more ESxPs among Blacks, more ENxPs among Whites, and more IxxJs among Orientals. The book didn’t say anything specifically about the personality of Whites except that they’re in between Blacks and Orientals. If we ask ourselves, ”What’s between ESxP and IxxJ?” then the answer would be ENxP, which fills in the gap. I don’t own the MBTI manual from CPP, but I found this comment on PersonalityCafe: ”CPP, the publisher of the MBTI, did report some information on type and race in the education chapter of the MBTI manual. The information indicates blacks reporting significantly higher perference percentages for ESxP than one would expect based on society in general.”

Population Statistics

Let’s take a look at the current population percentages of the United States for both race and type.

Blacks – 13%

Whites – 78%

Asians – 5%

Neuroscience of Personality
Looking at these statistics, it’s interesting to imagine how many Extraverted Sensing types one might find in the Black population. Every third Black could be an ESxP. Meanwhile, Introverted iNtuition types might not be so uncommon among Orientals.

Literature Evidence
Throughout his book, Rushton’s writing provides clues that Blacks could be considered an Se race and Orientals an Si/Ni race, with Whites in between.

Lisäksi mainittakoot muutama muu koe noin yleisestä käyttäytymisestä:

Yhdysvalloissa suoritettiin psykologinen koe, jossa lapsille annettiin mahdollisuus valita ottaako pieni suklaapatukka nyt vai suurempi viikon päästä. Mustat lapset valitsivat useammin pienen suklaapatukan nyt kuin myöhemmin. Valkoisilla keskimääräisesti suurempi osa valitsi suuremman patukan viikon päästä.

Uhkarohkea käyttäytyminen on yleisempää mustilla, latinoilla sekä Amerikan intiaaneilla verrattuna valkoisiin. Yhdysvalloissa edellä mainittujen vähemmistöjen edustajat kiinnittävät ajaessaan turvavyönsä harvemmin kuin valkoiset. Amerikan intiaanit ja mustat joutuvatkin kaksinkertaisesti useammin auto-onnettomuuksiin kuin valkoiset. Lapsuuden ja nuoruuden käytöshäiriöiden määrät noudattavat samaa rotujärjestystä, ollen suurin mustilla ja pienin aasialaisilla

Tuollaiset kokeet on ihan mielenkiintoisia, mutta ei toki ihan vedenpitäviä sikäli kun ympäristö myös varmasti vaikuttaa jonkin verran käyttäytymiseen.

Kaikkein vakuuttavampia kokeita on ollut ns. Minnesotan poikkirodulliset adoptio-tutkimukset, missä valkoiset perheet adoptoi mustia tai aasialaisia lapsia, ja silloinkin ilmeni, että mustat adoptoidut lapset olivat keskimäärin enemmän aktiivisia ja häiriköiviä kuin valkoiset lapset, siinä missä Koreasta adoptoidut olivat hiljaisempia ja vähemmän aktiivisia kuin valkoiset lapset. Toinen lähes vastaava tutkimus tehtiin Quebecissä Kanadassa maahanmuuttaja lasten keskuudessa, missä opettajavat havaitsi enemmän mukautumista ja vähemmän vihamielisyyttä aasialaisten lasten keskuudessa kuin valkoisten lasten. Mustien lasten keskuudessa taas oli vähemmän sopeutumista ja enemmän vihamielisyyttä verrattuna valkoisiin lapsiin. Eli tutun kaavan mukaan menee, valkoiset ollen näin taas mustien ja aasialaisten välissä keskimaastossa, mitä luonteeseen tulee.

Aasialaiset, on tutkimusten mukaan myös vähemmän kiinnostuneita seksistä kuin valkoiset, valkoiset taas on vähemmän kiinnostuneita siitä kuin mustat.

Lisäksi yleisiä luonneroja on kartoitettu ns. Eysenck Personality Questionnaire ja Cattell’s Sixteen Personality testien avulla. Kyselyissä Aasialaiset olivat vähemmän aggressiivisia, impulsiivisiä ja dominoivia kuin mustat tai valkoiset siinä missä valkoiset olivat vähemmän noita kuin mustat. Aasialaiset olivat myös enemmän varovaisia kuin mustat tai valkoiset.

Kaikenkaikkiaan tässä vielä Rushtonin tutkimuksien kiistanalaisia tuloksia, jotka ei siis ole minun mielipiteitä tai kannanottoja.

On average, Orientals are slower to mature, less fertile, less sexually active, less aggressive, and have larger brains and higher IQ scores. Blacks are at the other pole. Whites fall in the middle, but closer to Orientals than to Blacks (pg. 7).

Blacks have from 3 to 19% more of the sex hormone testosterone than Whites or East Asians. The testosterone translates into more explosive energy (7).

By the teenage years, Blacks have faster reflexes, as in the famous knee-jerk response (7).
Further, the hormones that give Blacks an edge at sports makes them restless in school and prone to crime (7).

Another claimed they had a natural sense of rhythm so that if a Black ”were to fall from heaven to earth he would beat time as he goes down” (8).

They praised some tribes for making fine pottery, forging iron, carving wooden art, and making musical instruments (8).
In 1275 Marco Polo arrived in China from his native Italy to open trade with the Mongol Empire. He found that the Chinese had well built roads, bridges, cities connected by canals, census takers, markets, standardized weights and measures, and not only coins, but paper money as well. Even a postal system was in existence (8).

Marco Polo wrote: ”Surely there is no more intelligent race on earth than the Chinese” (8).

Around 200-100 B.C., the Chinese used written exams to choose people for the civil service, two thousand years before Britain (8).

Orientals are a ”model minority.” They have fewer divorces, fewer out-of-wedlock births, and fewer reports of child abuse than Whites. More Orientals graduate from college and fewer go to prison (10).

Orientals are the least sexually active, whether measured by age of first intercourse, intercourse frequency, or number of sexual partners. Blacks are the most active on all of these. Once again Whites are in between (10).

Orientals are more K-selected than Whites, while Whites are more K-selected than Blacks. Highly K-selected women produce fewer eggs (and have bigger brains) than r-selected women. Highly K-selected men invest time and energy in their children rather than the pursuit of sexual thrills. They are ”dads” rather than ”cads” (12).

Because intelligence increased the chances of survival in harsh winter environments, the groups that left Africa had to evolve greater intelligence and family stability. This called for larger brains, slower growth rates, lower hormone levels, less sexual potency, less aggression, and less impulsivity. Advanced planning, self-control, rule-following, and longevity all increased in the non-Africans (12).

Studies find that Blacks are more aggressive and outgoing than Whites, while Whites are more aggressive and outgoing than Orientals.

Black rates of drug and alcohol abuse are higher (15).

A study carried out in French-speaking Quebec looked at 825 four- to six-year-olds from 66 countries. The immigrant children were rated by 50 teachers in preschool classes. The teachers found more adjustment and less hostility among Oriental children than among White children, but they also saw more adjustment and less hostility among White children than among Black children (15).

Racial differences in personality are found using tests such as the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire and Cattell’s Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire. Orientals everywhere are less aggressive, dominant, and impulsive than Whites and Whites are less so than Blacks. Orientals are more cautious than either Whites or Blacks (15-16).

There are important race differences in time-orientation and motivation. One study asked Black children in the Caribbean to choose between a small candy bar now and a larger bar a week later. Most chose the small one now. A focus on the present moment as opposed to delayed gratification is a major theme in the research on Black psychology (16).

East Asian countries like Japan and Singapore have lower death rates than European countries. European countries have lower death rates than African and Black Caribbean countries. But, the pattern for suicide is reversed (16).

Orientals are the most willing to delay gratification (17).

Racial differences are found in sexual permissiveness, thinking about sex, and even in levels of sex guilt. In one study, three generations of Japanese Americans and Japanese students in Japan had less interest in sex than European students. Yet each generation of Japanese Americans had more sex guilt than White Americans their age. In another study, British men and women said they had three times as many sexual fantasies as Japanese men and women. Orientals were the most likely to say that sex has a weakening effect. Blacks said they had casual intercourse more and felt less concern about it than whites did (18).

In the 19th century, the famous neurologist Paul Broca found that Orientals had larger and heavier brains than did Whites, while Whites had larger and heavier brains than did Blacks. Broca also found that White brains had more surface folding than Black brains. (The more folded the surface of the brain, the more brain cells it can contain.) White brains also had larger frontal lobes which are used in self control and planning (25).

The Minnesota Transracial Adoption Study also showed that there are race differences in personality. Black 17-year-olds were more active and more disruptive than White 17-year-olds. Korean children raised in White American families were quieter and less active than White children (31).

With higher testosterone levels, Blacks are more likely to put time and energy into having offspring. On the other hand, Asians and Whites with lower testosterone levels put more time and energy into caring for a few offspring and making long term plans (38).

Making special tools, fires, clothing and shelters called for higher intelligence. Moving ”Out of Africa” meant moving into a K-type life-history strategy. That meant higher IQ, larger brains, slower growth, and lower hormone levels. It also meant lower levels of sexuality, aggression, and impulsive behavior. More family stability, advanced planning, self-control, rule-following, and longevity were needed (41).
